Are you ready for coaching?

Recently, a colleague and I were sharing that we prefer working with clients who are READY for coaching.  That got me thinking, what does that readiness really mean to me and to my clients?  How do I know, how do you know, if you are ready?
I think it comes down to whether you have both the internal and external interest.  And this leads me to a lot of questions…

Internal Elements of Leadership

Are you curious and willing to be introspective?

The most important elements of leadership are self awareness and the ability, willingness and desire to “self reflect” with the continued emphasis on growing one’s ability to lead well.  So what does this mean?  Two important traits of self reflection have to do with curiosity and objectivity. Are you able and interested in doing this?  Do you have the ability to look back at an action or activity and ask yourself; how did that go, what did I do well, what could I have done better, what might I do the next time?  What went as expected, what happened that was unexpected?  Could I have done more of something, less of something or perhaps none of something? Are you willing to be introspective in this way?  Then you are ready for coaching.

How do you want to become a better leader?

For leaders, growth is an important imperative. I am not talking about growth in terms of revenue or EBITA, but growth as it relates to individuals and the culture created as a result of how individuals behave and treat each other. How do you want to become a better leader?  What are the external measures of this?  How do you want to show up?  What is it that you want to do and say, i.e. how do you want to behave as a leader?  What is it that you want to create?  What are your values and how do you mesh with the values of the company?  How are your values translating into the culture of the company?  Do you recognize your responsibilities as it relates to your interactions with your employees?

Are you ready?
